Flora Griffin Obituary

Flora Jean Griffin, age 71, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2019 at the University of Chicago Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. She was born February 23, 1948 in Dekalb, Mississippi, to Adena Griffin Rush and Melvin Rush. She grew up in Mississippi with her fourteen siblings.

Shortly after graduating from Whisenton High School in Dekalb, Mississippi, she moved to Chicago to find work. In Chicago, is where she met Walter Leonard Griffin, the love of her life and the man she would later marry in 1973. the couple raised four wonderful sons together- Brandon, Mark, Mike and Tron before Walter passed away in 2000.

Flora Jean was a wonderful woman, but more importantly, she was a wonderful mother who made sure her children were surrounded by love. She knew she wanted to raise men who treated everyone they met with respect. Her sons are often asked why are they so respectful; in which they always say, 'because our parents raised us that way'.

Flora Jean may have moved to Chicago from Mississippi but like they say you can take the woman out of Mississippi but you can't take Mississippi out of the woman, If you ever ate her cooking, you know exactly what that means. She loved Chicago, but she would tell you they don't season food in Chicago like do do in Mississippi. She loved her hometown, but she loved her parents and siblings more. She would always say she had the best childhood.

Her sons grew up hearing so many stories about her life in Mississippi from learning about the family dogs: Whitey, Po Boy, and Flip to learning about Aunt's Brenda's pet chick. And let's not forget the raccoon they called Cooney.

Flora Jean is survived by her sons, Brandon, Mark and Tron Griffin of the Chicago land area, and Mike Griffin, daughter-in-law, Kumiko Griffin, grandchilden Walter and Alexander Griffin of the Dallas area; her siblings, Linda Hollins, Mavis Rush and Brenda Madison of Preston, Mississippi, Edna Westerfield and Melvin, Jr, Rush of Dekalb, Mississippi, Willie Marvin Rush of Davenport, Iowa, Dorothy Rainey, Jewel Walton and Thirnell Penn of San Francisco, California, and Jessie M. Butler of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Flora Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Arlena Griffin Rush and Melvin Rush, siblings, Mary D. Coleman, Mildred Rush, Otis Rush and Charles Rush
