Bessie Lewis was born on August 30, 1931 in Blackwell, Arkansas. She was welcomed into this world into the arms of her parents, Larry and Mary Teague. Bessie was the youngest of five siblings, consisting of brothers; James, Samuel, and Asberry, and sister; Mae Teague.
Shortly after completing high school, Bessie relocated from Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Detroit, Michigan to live with her sister Mae Hurd. There she entered the workforce employed by places like the phone company, Children's Hospital, and her sister's salon.
In 1958, Bessie was joined in holy matrimony to Ernest Lewis. There union bore their son, Larry, in 1960. Not too long afterwards, Larry was diagnosed with the disease Sickle Cell Anemia. Despite the doctor's prognosis, Bessie supported and cared for he son until he transitioned at the age of 37. In 1970, their second child was born; daughter, Leah. Bessie was always a very devoted and loving mother.
After working for a few prominent healthcare facilities in Chicago, IL., Bessie retired from Cook County Hospital's dietary after many years of service. After retirement she found pleasure in gardening, cooking, and bouncing her great-grandchildren on her knee.
